Three hand stitched earthly friends...

I created these characters for the Cat and the Kokedama exhibition, all are inspired by the characters in the book.  A book about friendship and finding what is home.

One by one I got to know them and fell in love with them all but the clown cat holds a piece of my soul, the most earthly and thoughtful of the collection. You can trace the influences from Japan with the Rei the Raccoon who wields her sweet dango! 

The squirrel is the sewing squirrel from the story. The mender, the stitcher of seams and dreams.

The Kokedama is the rock, the place called home.

All three are made from buried fabrics, living underground for a month before I gently washed away the earth keeping the magic inside the fabric. They are all hand embroidered and painted evolving into an eclectic bunch. I hope they feel like old friends found in the attic, loved and refound, bringing a smile and humble comfort.
